காதலர் தினம் aka Valentine’s day


நியூஜெர்ஸி சிந்தனை வட்டம் பொறுப்பாளரும், நிறுவனருமான திரு. ஆனந்த் முருகானந்தம் பற்றி ஏற்கெனவே இங்கே எழுதியிருக்கிறேன். அவர் வேதியியல் ஆய்வாளர் என்றாலும், தமிழ் இலக்கியத்தின் மேல் தீராக் காதல் கொண்டு அலசி ஆய்ந்து வருபவர். பறவைகளை நேசிப்பவர். அவர் வீட்டுக்குப் போனால் புஷ்நெல் பினாகுலர் எடுத்து வைத்து, பின் கட்டுத் தோட்டத்தை நோக்கி நான் உட்கார்ந்து விடுவேன். மரங்களடர்ந்த தோட்டம் பறவைகள் சரணாலயம்.

அவருடைய மின்னஞ்சல்கள் எப்போதுமே சுவாரஸ்யமானவை. ஒரு புதுப் பார்வை தாங்கி வருபவை. இந்த வேலண்ட்டைன்ஸ் டே-யை ஒட்டி அவர் அனுப்பிய மின்னஞ்சலை அப்படியே கீழே தந்துள்ளேன்.

When Valentine Day is taken positively, it describes true love between partners. On this day, it is interesting to think about  a bird called “Andril” in Tamil. According to classical literature, it is believed that the male and female Andril birds live together for long time; for a life time. Which bird is it? Can we see it today? Yes,  but there are at least three species mentioned in the internet.
1. Demoiselle Crane:
In Rajasthan the bird is called Koonj. It is derived from Kraunch (sanskrit). There is a legend connecting Kraunch bird to Valmiki and origin of Ramayana. The bird is described in wikipedia-

It is called “saras” in Hindi. In Gujarat, in some communities, newly wed couple are asked to see a pair of these birds as  part of their marriage ritual. The birds migrate in large number to Bharatpur Sanctuary in Rajasthan.

3. Ibis:
There are references in Tamil calling Ibis or Glossy Ibis(Vellai or Karuppu Arival Mookkan) as Andril.

So which one is really the Andril?  We may have to do some  research by studying  the behavior described in Tamil literature and compare with the ornithological data. Nevertheless it appears to be an apt bird for the occasion.
